After 64 years of marriage, Jim and Rena Hicks had built a life full of love, memories, and deep community roots. But as health challenges emerged, everyday living began to feel more uncertain. Following heart surgery, Jim was advised to stop handling home maintenance tasks. Rena, a cancer survivor who had also experienced a serious fall and hip fracture, struggled with chronic anxiety that left her exhausted and sleepless.
They knew something had to change — but like many couples, they wondered what the next step should be.
“Before we moved to Woodleaf, I would lie awake at night and worry,” Rena shared. “What was I going to do if something happened to Jim or me?”
Encouraged by their children and guided by experiences shared through their church and close friends, Jim and Rena began exploring senior living options. During their visits, one place stood out immediately.
“We looked at all the options in this area,” Jim said. “Some are very nice — I’ve had family in several — but there is no comparison to Woodleaf.”
They were struck by the warmth of the community, the genuine kindness of the staff, and the way residents looked out for one another. With optimism and open hearts, they listed their home. It sold within a week — and Woodleaf was ready to welcome them.
A Sense of Safety from Day One
The change was immediate. With 24/7 support from Woodleaf’s trained and compassionate team, the worries that once filled their nights quickly faded.
“The first night we spent here, I woke up the next morning and said, I feel so safe,” Rena recalled. “Knowing all I have to do is push a button and help is close by gives me such peace of mind.”
For Jim, peace of mind also meant freedom from constant maintenance. When a plumbing issue flooded their bathroom and hallway, Woodleaf’s maintenance director responded within minutes — even returning after hours to resolve the issue completely.
“He knew exactly what to do and never complained,” Jim said. “That impressed me.”
Life Filled with Purpose, Joy, and Connection
Today, Jim and Rena’s calendar is anything but quiet. Jim proudly serves as the “Captain” for Woodleaf outings, guiding residents on scenic drives, picnics, and excursions — captain’s hat included. Together, they enjoy museum visits, lunches at new restaurants, and road trips that spark laughter and friendship.
“If we were still at home, we’d be sitting around bored to tears,” Rena said.
They also appreciate the everyday comforts that make life easier — from delicious meals and housekeeping to laundry services and personal care.
“They even fold our underwear,” Rena laughed. “This is what retirement is supposed to be.”
Community That Feels Like Family
One of the most meaningful moments since moving to Woodleaf was renewing their wedding vows — celebrated with a gala reception hosted by staff and fellow residents. Jim continues his ministry by leading morning devotions, and both enjoy singing together in the Woodleaf Glee Club.
With predictable expenses, no surprise repairs, and a strong sense of belonging, Jim and Rena have found peace, stability, and joy in this new chapter.
“We’re getting more than we’re giving,” they say together. “We truly love the people here.”
